The share register is public, and what that means when someone asks.

Anyone may read a Swedish company's share register, at the company. Who can ask, what the company has to show, and what it does not have to do.

In short

Yes, it is public. A company that is not an avstämningsbolag must keep its register available at the company for everyone who wants to read it (ABL 5 kap. 10 §). An avstämningsbolag is a company whose shares are registered with a central securities depository, as a listed company's are. The law sets no condition: the person does not have to be a shareholder, or say why.

It is read at the company. When the register is kept by computer, the company lets anyone who asks read a current printout, or the register in another current form, at the company (5 kap. 10 §). For these companies the law says nothing about sending a copy.

Only the company has it. Bolagsverket does not hold share registers, so the register of such a company can only be read by asking the company. The board is responsible for keeping it available (5 kap. 7 §), and failing to keep it available is punishable (30 kap. 1 §).

When someone asks

01
What happensSomeone asks to read the register: a shareholder, a prospective buyer, a journalist.
In aktiebok.ioNothing yet. The person needs no account and is not added anywhere.
02
What happensYou agree on a time at the company, or decide to send the register instead. The law asks for the first; many companies do the second because it is less work.
In aktiebok.ioExport, with Share register chosen, as of today, as a PDF in Swedish or English.
03
What happensThe person reads the whole register as it stands that day.
In aktiebok.ioThe PDF is the register in number order, with every holder. An admin chooses Full under Personnummer for the printout read at the company; Birth year is for a copy sent on. The PDF also prints a holder's contact email where one is entered, which the law does not ask for.
04
What happensA shareholder wants to follow the register from now on, not ask each time.
In aktiebok.ioUnder Visible to on the holder's row, give their email address. They sign in and read the register. Nothing is sent to them.

What the reader sees

Everything the register holds
Every share's number, the holders with name, id number and postal address, the class, whether an aktiebrev exists, and the förbehåll (5 kap. 5 §). The rule on reading it makes no exception for any of these. Read more: What is a share register (aktiebok)?
The register as it stands now
The printout must be current (5 kap. 10 §). What has been removed from the register is kept for at least ten years (5 kap. 3 §), but the right is to read the register as it stands today.
Not what lies outside it
The price paid for the shares, a shareholders' agreement, warrants and options, the holders' email addresses: none of it is part of the register the law describes, and none of it has to be shown.

At a general meeting of such a company the whole register, as it stands on the day of the meeting, is kept available for the shareholders (7 kap. 28 §). More in The voting list (röstlängd) and the dividend.

Listed companies

For an avstämningsbolag, a company whose shares are registered with a central securities depository, as a listed company's are, another rule applies (5 kap. 19 §).

  • A printout is kept at the company, and at the depository when the depository keeps the register. The only Swedish depository is Euroclear Nordics AB, earlier Euroclear Sweden.
  • It may be up to three months old, and lists the shareholders in alphabetical order.
  • Small holdings are left out. A shareholder with 500 shares or fewer is not shown, unless that shareholder owns the whole company.
  • Anyone may have a copy: a current printout of the register, or of part of it, if they pay the cost.

An example

An example · Blåsippan Robotics AB

A journalist writing about robotics companies emails Blåsippan Robotics AB and asks to see its share register.

  • Astrid Lindqvist, who is on the board, offers a time at the office that week.
  • She exports the share register as a PDF, as of that day, and the journalist reads it there: four rows, 102 000 shares, four holders.
  • The journalist sees that Granliden Kapital AB holds 12 000 B shares. What Granliden paid for them is not in the register, and neither is the shareholders' agreement.
  • Astrid could have emailed the PDF instead. Nothing in the law asks her to, and nothing stops her.
  • Sara Nyström, a shareholder, does not need to ask: the register is visible to her email address, and she signs in and reads it.

Questions that come up

Is the share register an official document (allmän handling)?
No. That is a term for documents held by public authorities. A company's share register is public for another reason: the Swedish Companies Act says it is to be available to everyone (5 kap. 10 §).
Can the company say no?
Not to someone who wants to read it at the company. Failing to keep the register available, on purpose or by carelessness, is punishable (30 kap. 1 §).
Do we have to send a copy by email or post?
The law does not say so for a company that is not an avstämningsbolag: it speaks of reading the register at the company. Sending it is allowed, and often simpler than a visit.
May we charge for it?
The law names a payment only for printouts from an avstämningsbolag (5 kap. 19 §). It names none for reading the register at the company.
How soon do we have to show it?
The law gives no number of days. It says the register is to be kept available, so a company that cannot show its register is already at fault.
What about personal data?
The company is the controller of the personal data in its register (5 kap. 4 §), and keeping and showing the register are duties in the law. What the company does beyond that, such as sending copies around, is its own decision. For a copy the law does not ask for, such as one to a bank, leave the full personnummer out.
Where do I find a company's share register?
At the company, and only there unless it is an avstämningsbolag. Bolagsverket's register of beneficial owners is another thing: it names those who ultimately control a company, not who holds its shares, and since 1 July 2026 access to it is limited.
Can a shareholder see what the others hold?
Yes. A shareholder has the same right as anyone else to read the whole register, and at a general meeting it is kept available for them (7 kap. 28 §).
